Why Aamir Khan and distributors were unhappy with Lagaan’s initial cut?

Superstar Aamir Khan’s blockbuster hit film Lagaan completed 25 years on Monday, June 15. Few people know that the initial cut of this Oscar-nominated film was 7 hours and 30 minutes long—significantly longer than the final theatrical release.

The Story Behind Lagaan

Lagaan tells an inspiring tale of villagers who suffer from severe drought and are burdened with heavy land tax during British colonial rule in India. When an arrogant British officer challenges the villagers to a game of cricket, the protagonist Bhuvan accepts the challenge. The stakes are high: if the villagers win, they are exempt from taxes for the next three years, but if they lose, they must pay triple the tax.

From 7.5 Hours to 3 Hours 44 Minutes

The first cut of Lagaan that director Ashutosh Gowariker showed to the team was around 7 hours and 30 minutes long. After several rounds of editing, the duration was reduced to 3 hours 44 minutes for its theatrical release.

Aamir Khan explained the editing process to Mashable, stating that the original cut had four and a half hours dedicated to the lead-up to the cricket match. The cricket match itself was divided into three days, with an hour allocated to each day, adding another 3 hours to the runtime. To bring the film down to its final length, the team removed several sequences and shortened many others, ultimately cutting roughly half of the original footage.

Distributors’ Initial Concerns

The distributors were upset with Aamir Khan because he chose not to sell the film’s rights in advance. As a first-time producer, Khan wanted to ensure everything was in order before making any sales, a decision he felt was responsible despite the financial risks involved.

Khan recalled their concerns about the film’s length: “I was telling them that this is an almost 4-hour film. There were no multiplexes and single screen had 4 shows—at 12, 3, 6, and 9. They said that your film is so long that we have to remove one show, so there will be 3 shows in a day instead of 4.” The distributors calculated that the film’s extended runtime would result in a 25% daily loss in revenue due to the reduced number of screenings.

An Ensemble Cast

Lagaan featured an impressive ensemble cast including Aamir Khan, Gracy Singh, Rachel Shelley, Paul Blackthorne, Suhasini Mulay, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Rajesh Vivek, Raghubir Yadav, Aditya Lakhia, Yashpal Sharma, Akhilendra Mishra, Dayashankar Pandey, and Amin Hajee, among others.

To celebrate its 25th anniversary, the film has been re-released in theatres, allowing new and longtime audiences to experience this classic on the big screen.
