India-Pak clash in T20 World Cup, Team India’s Women’s Brigade will take the first step towards the title
Balanced in every department, the Indian team will hope for a good start from openers Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma in the first match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup against arch-rivals Pakistan on Sunday.
India, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, who won the ODI World Cup last year, is eyeing a second consecutive ICC title. India’s record against Pakistan has also been excellent.
India has won 13 matches against Pakistan in the T20 format while losing three.
The last time both the teams faced each other was in the T20 World Cup in Dubai in 2024 in which India won by six wickets.
Since then, there has been consistency in the performance of the Indian team in white ball cricket. India won the ODI World Cup for the first time and now almost the same team will try for the T20 title.
Before the tournament, India defeated Australia by 2. By 1 and England by 3. Defeated by 2 while Sri Lanka won by 5. Won by 0.
However, they were defeated by South Africa (4.1) and England (2.1) in their home series.
The key to India’s performance has been the starts from openers Mandhana and Shefali.
After scoring 82 runs against Australia in February, Mandhana has scored 13, 12, 37, 0, 32 and eight runs in the next six matches.
After scoring 64 runs in Johannesburg, Shefali scored 9, 4, 2, 22 and 11 runs in the next five matches. They will have to perform better against the Pakistan team captained by Fatima Sana.
Sana is in great form and last year her average with the bat was more than 50 and bowling was less than 25. He recently scored a T20 half-century in 15 balls against Zimbabwe in Karachi. Enough for the Indian bowlers to control their bat. Will have to work hard especially when Amanjot Kaur and Kashvi Gautam are out due to injury.
Harmanpreet Kaur returned to form by scoring half-centuries against South Africa and England, which is a good sign for the middle order.
Jemimah Rodrigues, Richa Ghosh and Bharti Fulmali will also be responsible for scoring runs. Pakistan has a good bowler in the form of left arm spinner Nashra Sandhu.
Wicketkeeper batsman Yastika Bhatia scored the most runs in the three-match series against England but she will have to improve her current strike rate of 99.
All-rounder Deepti Sharma will have to contribute with both bat and ball although the pitches will not suit her off-spin bowling.
