South Indian Beans Poriyal Recipe

Ingredients

  • 250 grams French beans, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon split urad dal
  • 1 teaspoon chana dal
  • 2 dried red chillies
  • 8-10 curry leaves
  • 2 green chillies, finely chopped
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 3 tablespoons fresh grated coconut
  • 2 tablespoons water

Preparation Time

  • Preparation: 10 minutes
  • Cooking: 15 minutes
  • Serves: 3-4
  1. Wash the beans thoroughly and trim the ends.
  2. Finely chop them into small, even pieces to ensure quick and uniform cooking.
  3. Heat coconut oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and allow them to crackle.
  4. Next, add urad dal and chana dal. Sauté until they turn golden brown.
  5. Add dried red chillies, curry leaves and green chillies.
  6. Add chopped beans, turmeric powder and salt.
  7. Mix well so the vegetables are coated evenly with the seasoning.
  8. Sprinkle a couple of tablespoons of water over the beans and cover the pan.
  9. Cook over low heat for 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the beans are tender but still retain a slight crunch.
  10. Once the beans are cooked, add freshly grated coconut.
  11. Mix gently and cook for another minute.
