Former New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson announces retirement from international cricket
New Delhi: New Zealand’s star batter and former captain Kane Williamson has his retirement from international cricket with immediate effect. His decision marks the end of a remarkable 16-year international career, during which he played 378 matches for the country across all formats.
His retirement decision comes in the midst of New Zealand’s ongoing Test series against England, in which they trail 1-0 after losing the opening match. He will not take any further part in the two-match series against England, with the Lord’s Test being his last international appearance.
In a statement released by New Zealand Cricket, Williamson said that he thought about the decision for a while, but over the last few days, it became clear to him that it is the right time.
“I’ve always felt a strong drive and hunger for international cricket, and I take pride in knowing I’ve given it my all in every match I’ve played for New Zealand. Continuing with anything less wouldn’t be right, and I feel fortunate to step away on my own terms,” Williamson said in a statement released by New Zealand Cricket.
New Zealand head coach Rob Walter praised Williamson and said that he has always put the team first, and they’re disappointed to see him go. He further added that Kane was an incredible player, a great teammate, a brilliant leader and a fantastic ambassador of cricket.
Sir Richard Hadlee, former New Zealand captain and the country’s highest wicket-taker in Tests, also lauded Williamson and said he’s been a wonderful player and a fine leader.
“He’s demonstrated a willingness to continually advance his game to the highest level in all three formats, and he rightfully finishes as one of the best players of his era,” Richard Hadlee said.
