India-US Gas Deal: Big blow to Gulf countries! India-America’s secret gas deal worked in times of crisis, all records broken

Iran War LPG Crisis: A huge upheaval is currently being seen on the front of global politics and international trade. Amidst the ongoing tension and war in the Middle East (North-East Asia), America has now emerged as the biggest supplier of LPG and LNG to India. According to the latest and shocking data of May 2026, for the first time in history, America has left behind the Gulf countries which traditionally supply gas. Due to increasing tension in West Asia, the world’s most important and sensitive sea route ‘Strait of Hormuz’ is almost at a standstill for the movement of ships.
Even in such a critical situation, India is taking very fast steps to strengthen its energy security and avoid any possible shortage of gas in the country. As part of its well-thought-out strategy, India has started purchasing gas from America in record-breaking quantities, reducing its dependence on Gulf countries. Let us tell you that India has been importing about 60 percent of its total requirement of LNG and almost the entire LPG through the sea route of the Strait of Hormuz. But since the Iran crisis that started in the last week of February, the passage of commercial ships through this sea route has completely stopped, due to which there has been a huge decline in the number of ships coming to the country from India’s old allies like Qatar, Saudi Arabia and UAE.
LPG import from Saudi Arabia reduced by 75 percent
The impact of this crisis can be clearly seen in the figures. In the month of May, LPG imports from Saudi Arabia to India have decreased by a huge 75 percent. But India has already solved it Due to which a record increase of 63 percent was recorded in LPG coming from America. India has made a bumper purchase of 6.30 lakh tonnes of LPG from America in the month of May alone. This astonishing figure is 60 percent more than the combined supply of all Gulf countries. Not only LPG, America has also broken all records of success in the case of LNG. In May 2026, the shipment of LNG coming from America to India has increased more than three times to an all-time record level of 9 lakh tonnes.
Indian government had already sensed the crisis, a special strategy came in handy
This consignment of gas coming to India from America is alone fulfilling more than 40 percent of the total requirement of the country. However, diplomatic experts say that due to India’s distance from America, India has to pay huge sea freight to bring this gas to its country, due to which the country’s import bill has increased significantly. But this amount is not big compared to the security and needs of the country. The Indian government had anticipated this terrible crisis long in advance and had started working on its backup strategy in time. This is the reason why the country’s government oil companies had already signed a big and strong structured contract with American suppliers to import 22 lakh tonnes of LPG for the year 2026, which is being very useful to the country in this crisis.
