Rohit Sharma’s support to Shreyas Iyer, said- now the good times of T20 captain will start

Batting legend Rohit Sharma has backed newly appointed Indian T20 captain Shreyas Iyer to succeed in his new role and described the T20 Mumbai League as an important platform to nurture the next generation of cricketers. Rohit’s comments came on a night when 21,708 fans packed the Wankhede Stadium to watch the star-studded Nuwama Private T20 Mumbai League 2026 clash between Sobo Mumbai Falcons and Triumph Knights Mumbai North East, which also featured Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav.

Iyer made his recent appointment as India’s T20 captain memorable with a match-winning inning of 61 runs off 36 balls to lead the Falcons to a five-wicket win. Rohit Sharma, face of the league, said that the challenging environment of Mumbai cricket helps prepare players for leadership roles at the highest level. He said that one gets to learn a lot by playing in Mumbai. And if you ask any captain who has captained India or Mumbai, they will also say the same. Because nothing is easily available here.

He further said that you really have to earn it. Therefore, captaincy is also something that you have to earn and earn the respect of people around you. And that’s something that all these players have in common. The World Cup-winning Indian captain recounted the journey of Mumbai cricketers who have led the national team, and cited Suryakumar Yadav and Shreyas Iyer as examples of tenacity and leadership.

He said that you have seen Suryakumar Yadav who took India to the World Cup final. See, if I am not wrong he made his debut for India at the age of 31. This means that he never gave up. He always wanted to remain in the competition. And when the opportunity came, he grabbed it with both hands. And they did so. He said that now Shreyas has been declared the T20 captain. And I’m sure he will have a great time too, considering the way he has captained his franchise in Mumbai over the last few years.
