Arrogant, spoiled brat everything true but only on the field: Ravi Shastri on Virat Kohli
Former India head coach Ravi Shastri recently opened up about Virat Kohli’s personality traits on and off the field. Having witnessed him go about his business from close quarters, Shastri agreed Kohli does come across as an arrogant, spoiled brat on the field. However, he insisted that it is only on the field, and the star batter has a completely different personality off it.
Shastri on Kohli’s On-Field Persona
Shastri shared a formidable coach-captain partnership with Kohli during his stint as the head coach of the Indian team. The duo is often credited with transforming India’s Test cricket by achieving incredible success both at home and overseas. India won their first-ever Test series in Australia under Kohli and Shastri’s leadership in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2018.
During an interaction alongside Kohli on the One8 YouTube channel, Shastri spoke about the star batter’s different personalities on and off the field. While he admitted Kohli is a spoiled brat when he is on the pitch, Shastri said the former India captain is a completely different person off it.
“Arrogant. Spoiled brat. Over the top. On edge. Everything true, but on the field. Totally the opposite off it. I love people who can switch on like that and then switch off,” Shastri said during the interaction.
Kohli’s Impact on Test Cricket
The former India head coach also hailed Kohli’s influence in helping India become a Test giant and pioneering the longest format as captain. Kohli is often credited with championing the Test format with his remarkable batting and leadership. He remains India’s most successful Test captain of all time with 40 wins in 68 Test matches.
“Then came him, one of the biggest ambassadors of red-ball cricket over the last, I still say the most influential in advancing the red-ball game. And with him leading from the front, you know it went down within the ranks,” Shastri added.
When will Virat Kohli Return to Action?
Virat Kohli is not part of India’s ODI squad for the ongoing three-match series against Afghanistan at home due to a hamstring injury. The star batter suffered an injury while playing for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru during the IPL 2026 final against the Gujarat Titans last month. He was subsequently ruled out of the ODI series against Afghanistan.
Kohli is expected to return to action when India take on England in a three-match series, starting 14 July. India will lock horns with England in a five-match T20I series next month before playing the hosts in the ODI rubber.
