India successfully tests Agni 4

New Delhi: India has successfully test-fired the Agni-IV ballistic missile from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur in Odisha on 6 August 2026. Conducted under the aegis of the Strategic Forces Command (SFC), the user trial successfully validated all key operational and technical parameters, reaffirming the missile’s reliability and operational readiness as a core component of India’s strategic deterrent.

Agni-IV is a two-stage, solid-fuel, surface-to-surface ballistic missile developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) as part of India’s Agni missile family. It has a strike range of approximately 4,000 km and can carry a payload of up to 1,000 kg, including either a conventional or nuclear warhead.

Agni-IV test chronology and classification

Agni-IV was first successfully flight-tested in November 2011, followed by a second developmental test in September 2012. The missile subsequently underwent a series of successful user trials conducted by the Strategic Forces Command in 2014, 2015, 2017, 2022 and, most recently, on 6 August 2026.

The latest trial, conducted from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur in Odisha, validated the missile’s operational readiness and technical performance.

India had issued a Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) for 6–7 August 2026 over the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean. The initial NOTAM reportedly covered a hazard zone extending approximately 2,530 kilometres from India’s eastern coast. It was later expanded to nearly 3,760 kilometres.

The scale of the notification fuelled speculation that India might be preparing for another strategic missile test involving a long-range ballistic missile or an advanced variant of the Agni series.

India’s missile test programme in 2026: A chronological overview

During 2026, India conducted a series of missile and rocket trials aimed at strengthening its strategic deterrence, precision-strike capabilities, air defence preparedness and indigenous defence technology. The tests covered ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, anti-ship weapons, guided rockets and missile defence systems.

February: Agni-III strategic missile validation

The year’s strategic missile trials began on 6 February, when India conducted a user trial of the Agni-III Intermediate-Range Ballistic Missile (IRBM) from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur in Odisha. With an estimated range of around 3,000–3,500 kilometres, Agni-III remains one of India’s key strategic missile systems.

March: Pinaka enhanced-range rocket trials

In March, India conducted proof trials of the Pinaka Enhanced Range rocket system, an upgraded version of the Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher family. During the evaluation, 24 rockets were fired to assess their accuracy, consistency and overall performance.

With an approximate range of 45–48 kilometres, the system represents an improvement in the Indian Army’s precision-artillery capabilities and long-range fire-support options.

May: Strategic and maritime strike capabilities

May witnessed several important developments in India’s missile programme.

Around 1 May, DRDO conducted a flight test of the Long-Range Anti-Ship Missile (LR-AShM). The indigenous system is intended to enhance India’s ability to engage naval targets at extended ranges.

On 8 May, India conducted a major strategic missile test involving an advanced Agni-series missile equipped with Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology. The demonstration marked an important milestone by showing the capability to deploy multiple independently guided re-entry vehicles from a single missile.

Such technology enhances survivability and strengthens strategic deterrence by allowing a missile to engage multiple target areas.

On 22 May, India conducted a user trial of the Agni-I Short-Range Ballistic Missile from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur. With an estimated range of approximately 700–900 kilometres, the trial validated the missile’s operational readiness under the supervision of the Strategic Forces Command.

June: Precision strikes, missile defence and cruise missile development

On 2 June, DRDO and the Indian Air Force (IAF) conducted flight trials of the RudraM-II air-to-surface missile from a Su-30MKI fighter aircraft. The missile was tested under demanding release conditions and successfully engaged its designated target. The trial validated the performance of its guidance, control and onboard systems.

A major milestone followed on 10 and 11 June, when India demonstrated elements of its multi-layered Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) architecture through a series of interceptor trials. The tests involved engagements against simulated ballistic missile threats and were aimed at validating India’s indigenous ability to detect, track and intercept incoming missiles.

During the same period, DRDO also conducted the maiden flight test of the Naval Anti-Ship Missile–Medium Range (NASM-MR). The trial marked progress in the development of indigenous naval strike systems.

On 15 June, DRDO tested the Long-Range Land Attack Cruise Missile (LRLACM), which is designed to provide a long-range conventional strike capability against land-based targets and strengthen India’s indigenous cruise missile programme.

July: Guided rockets and indigenous air defence

On 8 July, DRDO conducted a flight test of the Pinaka Long Range Guided Rocket (LRGR) at the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur. The test highlighted improvements in precision-guided artillery rocket technology.

On 23 July, India achieved another milestone with the successful maiden flight test of Project Kusha, an indigenous Long-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (LR-SAM) system developed by DRDO.

Project Kusha is being developed to provide India with an advanced air defence capability against threats including fighter aircraft, cruise missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles and other aerial platforms. The successful demonstration marked an important step towards reducing the country’s dependence on imported air defence systems.

Taken together, the 2026 testing programme reflects India’s broader efforts to enhance self-reliance in defence technology while expanding its strategic deterrence, precision-strike and defensive capabilities.
