India captain Shubman Gill suffers injury scare ahead of warm-up match vs Sri Lanka
New Delhi: Team India Test captain gave the team management a scare after suffering two separate blows during an intense training session in Colombo. The incident happened on the eve of India’s three-day warm-up match against a local XI.

Gill suffered the first blow on his right thumb while batting in the nets, facing Gurnoor Brar. According to Times Now, the skipper quickly called for the medical team. Gill left the session for a brief time to have his thumb strapped up by the team physio. He then eventually returned to the nets and faced spin bowlers to complete the remainder of his batting drills.
Later in the afternoon, Gill copped the second blow during a slip-catching routine, after misjudging a sharp catch. The injury forced him to stop fielding drills and apply an ice pack. But the preliminary assessments gave the team big relief, indicating no structural damage or fracture, and Gill was able to complete his training without major discomfort.

Injury concerns in Indian team
Gill’s injury scare comes ahead of the first Test against Sri Lanka, which will begin on August 15 in Galle. Star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has already been sidelined from the two-match series due to injury, while all-rounder Washington Sundar and pacer Harshit Rana are also ruled out.
Sai Sudharsan is still recovering from a toe problem at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru and will miss the warm-up fixture. Given the injury problems in the squad, the team management will look to monitor players’ workload in the warm-up game, which will begin on August 7.
The Men in Blue will start the 2025–27 World Test Championship cycle in Sri Lanka and will also play series against New Zealand (away) and Australia (home). Captain Gill remains crucial to India’s chances of staying in contention for a place in the WTC Final.
