X (aka Twitter) product lead steps down a year after Elon Musk hired him
X (formerly Twitter) may never be the same. Nikita Bier, whom Elon Musk appointed as X’s product lead last year, has announced he is stepping down. In a post on X, Nikita wrote: “It’s time to pass the baton and return to my natural state: that of a simple user posting content.”
Nikita Bier shared this news just over a month after marking his one-year anniversary in the role, which he assumed last June. His departure comes just weeks after Musk’s companies—SpaceX, X, and xAI—began operating under a joint structure.
In the same post, Nikita stated that serving the X community had been “the privilege of a lifetime” and added that “managing this app is a 24/7 job, and the time has come for me to take a break.” However, he will continue to collaborate with X as an advisor.
Elon Musk responded to Nikita Bier’s farewell post: “Thanks for helping make this platform so much better! You will be missed,” the tech billionaire wrote.
Nikita Bier drove major changes at X
During his tenure as product lead, Nikita implemented numerous far-reaching changes at X. These included the introduction of the “About this account” page, which displays the account’s country of origin. This feature exposed several popular accounts that were impersonating US political influencers without actually being so.
X’s head of product also took action against content designed to force engagement and against creators who reposted others’ content. Additionally, the platform launched X Chat, a new encrypted messaging system.
At the same time, X faced scrutiny over Grok, its AI chatbot, which at one point displayed images of users in bikinis generated without their consent. Returning to Nikita Bier’s post, he noted that X had experienced “unprecedented growth” in terms of new users and engagement levels. The app was breaking records month after month and had climbed 70 spots in the App Store compared to the same period the previous year.
Nikita added that, although he and his team had worked on launching around 30 new products over the past year, X still had a long way to go. “There is certainly more work to be done, but our foundations are stronger than ever,” he added.
Who is Nikita Bier?
Nikita Bier is a startup founder and a venture capital partner at Lightspeed. The venture capital firm had dubbed him the “king of virality” due to his ability to create products with high viral potential.
Before X, he founded tbh—acquired by Facebook in 2017—and Gas—acquired by Discord in 2023; both apps were subsequently shut down. Bier was appointed head of product last year, just days before Linda Yaccarino stepped down as X’s CEO.
Nikita Bier states that the “next leaders” include Benji Taylor in design, Mridul Singhai in core product engineering, and Dinkin Flickaa in mobile engineering. However, it remains unclear who will take over his role as the platform’s head of product.
