Human rights crisis deepens in PoJK, UKPNP warns Pakistan – action against activists should be stopped
The United Kashmir People's National Party (UKPNP) has alleged deteriorating human rights situation in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK). The party has warned that amid the ongoing political crisis in the area, discontent is increasing among the people, there are restrictions on civil liberties, there is a shortage of food items and pressure on workers is increasing. These concerns were expressed at an online meeting, which was attended by senior party leaders and representatives from the UK, Europe and PoJK. The main topics of conversation were the recent protests, alleged human rights violations, action against activists and the broader political situation in the region. The people attending the meeting expressed deep concern over the recent incidents. He said that due to these incidents, people have lost their lives and tension has increased in PoJK. The party described the situation as extremely worrying and accused the authorities of failing to address the growing grievances of the people.
In the meeting, mainly the ongoing movement led by 'Joint Awami Action Committee' was discussed. UKPNP leaders said that the public's demands could no longer be ignored and warned that if talks were not held with the leaders of the protests, the crisis could escalate. The party also expressed deep concern about the increasing pressure on activists and civil society groups. Speakers said that peaceful protests are a democratic right and alleged that attempts to suppress or discredit mass movements are increasing tensions instead of reducing them.
The people attending the meeting also stressed on the reports of shortage of food items and interruption in the supply of essential goods.
