Three more Lalbagh-style parks in Bengaluru soon: CM

Bengaluru: Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Thursday announced that the state government is planning to develop three new parks on the lines of Lalbagh Botanical Garden in Bengaluru as part of its efforts to enhance the city’s green cover and improve public spaces.

Speaking after inaugurating the 220th Lalbagh Flower Show, themed “The Glory of the Ganga Dynasty”, as part of the Independence Day celebrations, Shivakumar said the government has identified Defence and forest land for the proposed parks. “We are planning to develop three Lalbagh-like parks in Bengaluru. One proposal involves Defence land, which will remain under the Defence Ministry’s ownership. We have already written to the Centre seeking permission to develop a public park there and I will soon meet the Defence Minister regarding the proposal,” he said.

The Chief Minister pointed out that the Prime Minister had earlier approved the development of a park on Defence land in Varanasi and expressed hope that a similar proposal for Bengaluru would also receive approval.

He added that the government is also exploring the development of parks on forest land within the city after discussions with Forest Department officials.

“The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), Bengaluru Development Authority (BDA), Horticulture Department and other agencies will be entrusted with the responsibility of implementing these projects. Our government’s priority is to preserve Bengaluru’s green cover and improve the quality of life for citizens,” Shivakumar said.

The Chief Minister described Lalbagh as more than just a botanical garden, calling it an important part of Karnataka’s history and heritage. He said this year’s flower show showcases the legacy of the Ganga Dynasty, highlighting its contribution to agriculture, irrigation, culture and social harmony. “The Gangas built lakes that continue to serve society even today. Their history reflects the lives, struggles and achievements of farmers. This exhibition celebrates Karnataka’s culture, agriculture and artistic heritage,” he said.

The flower show will remain open for 10 days, and the Chief Minister urged people from across the state, including youth, women and senior citizens, to visit the exhibition.

He also noted that Lalbagh was established by Hyder Ali, expanded during the British era and is now being further developed by the Karnataka government. Shivakumar announced that the government will unveil a new initiative on August 15 aimed at strengthening farmers’ livelihoods and increasing green cover across the state. “The programme will focus on protecting farmers’ livelihoods through a partnership between the government and farmers. It will be part of the government’s 100-day action plan,” he said.
