The untold story behind Operation Safed Sagar
Set during the Kargil War of 1999, the Golden Arrow Squadron of the Air Force takes flight on a dangerous mission behind enemy lines, as per Netflix India. When Pakistani forces occupied position in the Kargil region of Jammu and Kashmir, the Indian Air Force was called in to provide aerial support. The codename given to the IAF’s mission was ‘Operation Safed Sagar’.
It was the most challenging operations because battles took place in the Himalayan terrain at extremely high altitudes. Fighter pilots fought in difficult weather conditions, navigate through mountainous landscapes and carry our precision strikes against enemy positions.
The series focus on the Golden Arrows Squadron, which comprised 17 squadrons of the Indian Air Force. The operation involved aircrafts such as the MiG-21, MiG-23BN, MiG-27 and Mirage 2000. Combat missions and target strikes were made between 15,000 and 18,000 feet above sea level.
The series is also inspired by the bravery of Squadron Leader Ajay Ahuja, an IAF pilot who was killed during the Kargil War. While attempting to locate an Indian Army aircraft, Ahuja’s aircraft was hit by enemy fire. He is still remembered for his courage during the Kargil War.

The operation, which was launched in support of the Army’s Operation Vijay, began after Pakistani soldiers and armed infiltrators occupied several strategic positions along the Line of Control (LOC) in in areas including Kargil, Drass, Batalik, and Mushkoh.
Operation Safed Sagar concluded alongside the success of Operation Vijay, as Indian forces regained control of the occupied mountain positions.
