Taniya scripts history, becomes first Indian to win beach wrestling medal at Youth Olympics
New Delhi: India’s Taniya made history at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympics by becoming the first Indian to win a medal in beach wrestling. She won a silver medal in the women’s 75kg category at the Youth Olympic Games. Taniya lost 1-2 to China’s Min Zhao in the gold medal match.

Beach wrestling made its historic debut at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympics, and Taniya ensured India won a medal in the inaugural edition. She enjoyed an impressive campaign in the competition, with her silver medal marking a significant moment for Indian wrestling.
Taniya started her campaign in the women’s 75kg category with a 3-1 win over Germany’s Mia Bauer. She went on to beat Greece’s Vasiliki Karavanou and Estonia’s Merily Vaester in her next two group-stage clashes to book a spot in the semifinals of the event.
Taniya defeated American Matilda Ann Hruby in the semifinal to secure a spot in the gold medal match. It was a huge win for the Indian as Hruby entered the Youth Olympics after winning the 75kg gold medal at the U17 Beach Wrestling World Championships in Baku in August this year.
Taniya defeated the American 3-1, but went down fighting against China’s Min Zhao in the final to miss out on the historic gold medal. Nonetheless, she secured a place in India’s wrestling history by becoming the first athlete from the country to win a Youth Olympic medal in beach wrestling.
