Sowmya Reddy resigns as Karnataka Pradesh Mahila Congress President
Bengaluru: Sowmya Reddy has resigned as president of the Karnataka Pradesh Mahila Congress, submitting her resignation to All India Mahila Congress president Alka Lamba on August 20. The development, which had remained confidential for nearly two months, has now come to light.

According to reports, Reddy stepped down over dissatisfaction with the absence of women in Chief Minister DK Shivakumar’s Cabinet. She is also said to have sought adequate representation for women in the Cabinet in her resignation letter.
Explaining her decision, Reddy said she had accepted the position for a two-year tenure, which had now ended. She stated that she was resigning to give someone else an opportunity.
Reddy clarified that she would continue in the post until a successor is appointed. During her tenure, she travelled extensively across Karnataka, promoting women’s education, healthcare and economic empowerment.
She credited the state government’s five guarantee schemes with advancing women’s empowerment and thanked party leaders and workers for their support. She pledged to continue working for Congress victories in the 2028 Assembly and 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
