PG medical student critically injured after alleged drunk-driving crash outside Rajahmundry mall

Rajahmundry (Andhra Pradesh): A postgraduate medical student sustained critical head injuries after a car allegedly driven by an inebriated man hit the motorcycle she was travelling on outside a shopping mall here in East Godavari district, an official said on Thursday.

According to the official, the incident occurred after two men, who had allegedly consumed alcohol, were denied entry into the mall by security personnel to watch a movie.

“A car driven by an inebriated man hit a motorcycle ridden by two postgraduate medical students outside a shopping mall, leaving the woman rider with critical head injuries,” the official told PTI.

According to police, the two men allegedly argued with the security staff after being refused entry. As they drove out of the mall basement, they hit a motorcycle carrying two postgraduate medical students before speeding away.

The victims, a male radiology postgraduate and a female dermatology postgraduate, were leaving the mall on a motorcycle when the car allegedly struck them, the official said.

The male student sustained contusions, while the woman suffered a severe head injury and was placed on ventilator support. Her condition was said to be critical.

The official said police registered a case after doctors confirmed a fracture, treating it as a case of causing grievous injury.

He said the vehicle involved in the accident had been seized and steps had been taken to ensure that the accused do not abscond.
