Leaders felicitate Asian Games gold medallist Poovamma
Mangaluru: Local leaders visited the residence of M R Poovamma, the coastal athlete who won gold for India in the 4×400m relay at the Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan, taking the coastal region’s name to the international stage. They congratulated her on her achievement.

Mangaluru City South BJP MLA Vedavyas Kamath said medal winners at the Asian Games had received cash rewards and encouragement in other states and urged the state government to extend similar recognition to Kudla’s golden girl. He also called for Poovamma to be appointed to a senior post under the sports quota. He expressed hope that she would achieve greater success in the years ahead and inspire young people through her accomplishments.
Dakshina Kannada MP Captain Brijesh Chowta also felicitated Poovamma. He said her strength, stride and spirit had brought global glory to India and kept the national flag flying high at the Asian Games. He described his visit to her residence as a moment of immense pride and said her journey should inspire young athletes to dream big, push their limits and strive for excellence.
Separately, district in-charge minister U T Khader, representing the district administration, felicitated Poovamma at her residence. District Commissioner Darshan H V, Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Vinayak Narwade Karbari, MUDA president Santosh Kumar Shetty, coach Dinesh Kunder, district Congress president Padmaraj R Poojary, Youth Empowerment and Sports Department deputy director Pradeep D’Souza, Kanachuru Monu, and Poovamma’s parents and family members were present.
