KSTDC plans ‘Mayura Ruchi on Wheels’ from November

Bengaluru: Tourists visiting major destinations across Karnataka will soon have access to clean and quality food at affordable prices, with the Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation (KSTDC) set to introduce a mobile food truck initiative called ‘Mayura Ruchi on Wheels’.

The project was approved at a board meeting held on Saturday under the chairmanship of Minister K.J. George. The tender process will begin on October 5, with KSTDC aiming to launch the food trucks by the third week of November, a KSTDC official said.

“Operators with extensive experience in the sector will be selected to run specially designed vehicles equipped with live kitchens. The objective is to provide quick service while ensuring that food is not wasted. Operators will also partner with restaurants around tourist destinations for sourcing the required ingredients,” the official said.

Each food truck is expected to cost around Rs 30 lakh. KSTDC will operate one food truck at each selected tourist destination. The pilot project will be launched in Hampi, Nandi Hills, Bengaluru and Mysuru, and will later be expanded to Madikeri and Jog Falls.

The food trucks will offer sandwiches, fries, burgers, pizza and ice cream, along with South Indian breakfast items such as idli, vada and dosa, select rice dishes, tea and coffee.

The official said the food trucks would also operate in high-footfall areas in Bengaluru and Mysuru, including Lalbagh, Cubbon Park, Palace Grounds, the Kadalekai Parishe venue and Mysuru Palace. The menu can be modified depending on the tourist destination and the number of visitors it attracts. The food trucks will serve only vegetarian food. Providing employment opportunities to local people and giving priority to regional cuisine are among the key objectives of the initiative.

The official said this would be the first such project in the country where a government organisation operates food trucks at tourist destinations where setting up permanent restaurants is not possible.

The operating hours of the food trucks will also vary depending on the location. For instance, at Nandi Hills, where tourists arrive early in the morning and queue up at the foothills, some food trucks will begin operations as early as 3 am to provide hot food to visitors.

Tourism Secretary Dr Ram Prasath Manohar said food was an important part of the overall tourism experience.Through ‘Mayura Ruchi on Wheels’, KSTDC’s hospitality services would be brought closer to tourists, he said.
