India moving towards a new generation of precision conventional strike capability

New Delhi: DRDO successfully flight tested indigenous PRALAY Missile on November 5 from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the Odisha coast. The test that was part of user evaluation trial met all the test objectives and the Ministry said that Pralay, the Quasi Ballistic indigenous missile’s induction into the armed forces has become imminent.

What makes PRALAY interesting is its quasi-ballistic flight profile, manoeuvrability and conventional warhead capability. It is designed to be difficult to intercept compared with more predictable ballistic trajectories.

What is special about PRALAY?

Most importantly it is a quasi-ballistic missile. It combines ballistic flight characteristics with the ability to manoeuvre during flight. So, it does not have to follow a completely predictable ballistic path. PRALAY is designed for conventional military missions. It can carry different types of conventional warheads. Its road-mobile launcher system gives the armed forces flexibility in deploying the missile. The December 2025 salvo trial demonstrated the ability to launch two missiles in quick succession from one launcher.

Approaching induction ?

During November 5 user evaluation trials, the missile successfully met all stipulated objectives. This indicates that the system has progressed beyond its developmental testing phase. It is closer to formal induction into the Indian Army and Air Force. The Defence Ministry has described induction as imminent, signalling that the missile could soon become part of India’s operational conventional strike capability.

Key Specifications

PRALAY is a short-range, surface-to-surface, quasi-ballistic missile with solid fuel propulsion. It is designed to carry conventional warheads. It has a range of approximately 150–500 km and a payload capacity at 500–1,000 kg. PRALAY is designed to provide Indian armed forces with a precision conventional strike capability.

Why does Pralay matter for India’s defence?
PRALAY strengthens India’s indigenous conventional missile capability and adds another option for the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force. It reduces depences on imported missiles and enhances ability to respond to regions’s nevolving security challenges.
