‘We fell bit short in our bowling’: Captain Shreyas Iyer after India suffer second-biggest T20I defeat
New Delhi: India captain Shreyas Iyer admitted that his side fell short with the ball in the fourth T20I against New Zealand in Auckland. , marking their second-biggest loss by runs in T20I cricket.

Chasing a 260-run target, the visitors never got close, with and Ishan Kishan falling in the first over. The Men in Blue then slipped to 61/4 in the powerplay and eventually finished at 172/9. Despite the batting unit’s poor performance, Iyer made no mention of its struggles in his post-match comments.
“I think we fell a bit short in our bowling to start with. Powerplay, especially in the third over, they got that momentum from there on, and yeah, a couple of bowlers tried to squeeze in, but I think exceptional knock by Glenn. Some phenomenal shots, which were like pure bliss. So kudos to him. He’s been consistent throughout the series, so a lot to learn from him,” Iyer said in the post-match presentation ceremony.
Glenn Phillips smashed 107 off 49 balls, powering the hosts to 259/7 in 20 overs. Michael Bracewell provided the perfect support, hitting 65 off just 25 deliveries. The Indian captain also acknowledged that some of his bowlers were playing at Eden Park for the first time, which could have been tricky for them due to the awkward dimensions.
“We knew the dimensions were going to be like this. First time for some of them. Not easy to adapt. The way they executed in the first three games was magnificent. Great learning curve,” he added.
India eye comeback in Hamilton
With the five-match series already secured 3-1, the Men in Blue will have one more opportunity to address their shortcomings when they face New Zealand in Hamilton for the fifth and final T20I.
“I feel that it’s important to retrospect, see where we can actually bounce back, coming into Hamilton and just a day off. So I personally feel that we can probably go back to the drawing board and see to it we analyse and try to execute to the best of our abilities in the next game,” Iyer added.
After the T20I series, India will take on New Zealand in five ODIs and two Tests. The ODI leg of the tour will begin on November 4, and the two-match Test series will start on November 19.
