Google Genie 4 vs Genie 3: What’s new in DeepMind’s latest AI world model?

Google DeepMind has introduced Genie 4, its latest artificial intelligence world model capable of creating realistic, interactive virtual environments in real time. Announced on October 27, the new model allows users to explore AI-generated worlds, interact with characters and change their surroundings through simple text instructions. Google claims Genie 4 offers major improvements in visual realism, human movement, physics and sound.

Unlike conventional AI video generators that produce clips for viewers to watch, Genie 4 creates environments that respond to user actions. A person can move around a virtual location, change the weather or introduce new objects as the simulation continues. Google is positioning the technology for gaming, filmmaking, robotics research and AI training.

What is an AI world model?

A world model is an AI system that learns how objects, people and environments behave and uses that knowledge to predict what happens next.

Imagine entering a virtual city and asking the AI to make it rain. The system attempts to simulate the changing weather, how people react and what happens to the surroundings.

Traditional video generators create a sequence of images. World models attempt to maintain an interactive environment where actions influence future events.

This makes the technology useful for training robots and AI agents in simulated environments before testing them in real-world situations.

What makes Google Genie 4 different?

Google says Genie 4 introduces several improvements over Genie 3, including more realistic environments and native audio generation.

The main features include:

  • Realistic graphics: More natural-looking environments, objects and people.
  • Improved physics: Better simulation of collisions, movement and aerodynamics.
  • Interactive controls: Users can change scenes using text prompts and keyboard controls.
  • Native audio: The model generates environmental sounds, music and interactive conversations.

Genie 4 combines technology from Google’s Gemini family. Gemini Omni helps generate realistic environments, and Gemini 3.8 Flash guides multi-step actions to maintain consistency during simulations.

Where could Genie 4 be used?

Game developers could create interactive prototypes without building every environment manually. Filmmakers could test camera angles, lighting and character movements before shooting.

Researchers could use simulated environments to train robots to perform tasks, respond to obstacles and understand their surroundings.

Google says journalists and educators are exploring ways to recreate historical environments and demonstrate events through interactive simulations.

When will Google Genie 4 be available?

Genie 4 is currently available to a limited group of trusted testers.

Google plans to expand access through Project Genie for Google AI Ultra subscribers, followed by selected developers using Gemini API and Google AI Studio. A wider release date has not been announced.

The technology still has limitations. Objects can change appearance during longer simulations, physical interactions may behave incorrectly, and AI-generated environments cannot perfectly reproduce real locations.
