FIR filed against woman over posters supporting Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam at Bengaluru protest

New Delhi: An FIR has been registered against a woman for allegedly displaying posters in support of Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam, both accused in the 2020 North-East Delhi riots case, during a protest at Freedom Park in Bengaluru.

The case was registered at Upparpet Police Station based on a complaint filed by a woman police officer who was deployed on security duty at the protest venue.

According to police, the FIR has been filed under charges related to alleged incitement with the intent to provoke unrest, and further investigation is in progress.

What happened?

The controversy arose during a protest held at Freedom Park on Friday, July 25, when the woman was seen holding placards carrying slogans in support of Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam.

Police also alleged that one of the posters carried the phrase “Ukhad Le BLR Police”, which they said was directed against the Bengaluru Police.

The posters drew the attention of security personnel stationed at the venue. To prevent any escalation or disturbance, police immediately seized the placards, officials said.

According to eyewitness accounts cited by the police, several other students present at the protest objected to the woman’s actions, confronted her over the posters, and asked her to leave the demonstration.

Based on the complaint filed by the police officer, an FIR has now been registered, and investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities have not announced any arrests in connection with the case so far.

The investigation is ongoing, and police are expected to determine whether any further legal action is warranted based on the evidence collected.
