ChatGPT begins showing ads in India; OpenAI sends emails to inform users

OpenAI is incorporating ads into ChatGPT. The company has been testing ads in certain regions for some time, and it seems India could be next. Some users in India have received a notice regarding the appearance of ads on ChatGPT as the company expands the rollout to more markets.

The email from OpenAI tells users about a change in the privacy policy for ChatGPT. “We are changing our Privacy Policy to add details about ads, on ChatGPT, including how they operate and how you can manage your time with them, ” the message says.

The company indicates that, moving forward, you may see ads on ChatGPT, though not on all plans. “Ads may appear on ChatGPT’s Free and ‘Go’ plans. Plus, Pro, Enterprise, Business, and Education plans do not include ads,” the email affirms.

For context, the ChatGPT “Go” plan is priced at 399 rupees per month, while the Plus plan costs 1,999 rupees monthly.

It is worth noting that OpenAI already displays ads on ChatGPT in the United States. The company has not made an official comment regarding the display of ads for users in India. This new change officially introduces ads in the United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, and South Korea. Tests are also underway in New Zealand, Australia, and Canada.

OpenAI states that ads do not influence ChatGPT’s responses

If you are concerned that ads might alter how ChatGPT provides answers, OpenAI assures: “Ads do not influence the responses ChatGPT gives you.” The company has explained that all ads will be labeled as “sponsored” and will appear “visually separated from the organic response.” You can picture it as something similar to the carousel of sponsored ads that appears when you perform a Google search. According to OpenAI, you might receive personalized ads “based on information that stays solely within ChatGPT, such as ads you’ve interacted with or the context of your conversations.”

OpenAI says that the things you tell ChatGPT and the conversations you have with it are not shared with people who pay for ads. Advertisers do not get to see what you say to ChatGPT, what you said before or any information about you. The people who pay for ads only get to know how many people saw their ad or clicked on it that is all OpenAI tells them about OpenAI and ChatGPT.

It is worth noting that in 2024, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman described advertising as a “last resort” for the company, but his stance has since changed.
