Inspired by a crime series Delhi man allegedly tried to fool police after wife’s murder

New Delhi: A 53 year old man from Delhi has been arrested after a multi state search for allegedly trying to avoid being caught by using tricks he claimed to have learned from a Hollywood true crime series.

The accused has been identified as Kamal Singh. Police alleged that he murdered his 50 year old wife Komal Singh at their home in Gagan Vihar in Shahdara on the night of July 30 following a long running property dispute.

Police allege suicide scene was staged to mislead investigators

According to police the couple’s son found his mother lying in a pool of blood inside the house. Investigators alleged that a blood stained pair of scissors had been placed in her hand to make the death appear to be a suicide. However the son suspected that his father was responsible and informed the police leading to the investigation.

During the probe police recovered the alleged murder weapon which they identified as a sword. Officials claimed that Kamal Singh had bought it in advance and hidden it inside a bag. Police also alleged that he later tried to throw it away to destroy evidence before it was recovered by investigators.

Investigators link CCTV evidence to alleged crime plan

Investigators said CCTV footage became the biggest breakthrough in the case. According to police the footage showed the couple alone inside the house after their children left that morning. Officials also claimed the recordings captured the victim’s screams and later showed Kamal Singh leaving the house carrying the alleged murder weapon hidden inside a bag.

During questioning police said Singh allegedly admitted that he was inspired by the true crime documentary series The Staircase. Investigators claimed he believed that hiding the actual weapon and placing another blood stained object at the scene would mislead the investigation. Police also alleged that he had planned the crime several days in advance and had even bought the scissors used to stage the scene beforehand.

Police intercept accused near Mathura after long chase

Before going into hiding Singh allegedly withdrew around Rs 7 lakh from his bank accounts. Police said technical surveillance tracked his movement from Delhi towards Gorakhpur where he allegedly planned to cross into Nepal. Officials said he later changed his route towards Mathura in an attempt to avoid arrest.

Police eventually intercepted him near Mathura Railway Station. During the operation investigators recovered Rs 1275000 in cash along with the scooter that was allegedly used during his escape. According to police CCTV footage technical surveillance and scientific evidence helped expose the alleged plan which Singh believed would prevent investigators from solving the case.
