LinkedIn Adds AI Slop Report Button as AI-Generated Posts Flood the Platform

LinkedIn is adding a button to report AI-generated junk content, enabling users to flag posts created by artificial intelligence. The initiative comes days after a study found that nearly half of the long-form content currently published on LinkedIn was written by AI rather than humans. The button—dubbed “Seems like AI slop”—should help LinkedIn curb the proliferation of this type of material.

This measure is seen as an acknowledgment of something millions of users have suspected for months: much of what appears in the platform’s feed was clearly written by AI. A recent study by Pangram highlighted that nearly 41% of long-form content on LinkedIn was AI-generated.

Hari Srinivasan, a LinkedIn product director, stated this clearly in a post announcing the update: “AI-generated junk content is a top priority for all of us.” He also explained the reasoning behind the new button: “We are expanding the ability for members to let us know if they think a post or comment looks like AI-generated junk content.” In other words, we might now see fewer posts along the lines of “I got fired, and it turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to me.” The new button gives users a way to directly flag this content and could, in the process, teach LinkedIn’s own AI to better identify AI-generated material. Perhaps the time has come for LinkedIn to fight robots with robots.

LinkedIn isn't the only platform fighting this battle

LinkedIn isn’t the first platform to move in this direction; it is simply the latest to admit it has a problem with AI-generated junk content. Substack recently launched its own AI detection tool, developed in partnership with the company Pangram—presumably so readers can finally confirm whether the author of their favourite newsletter actually holds their own opinions or simply possesses a knack for crafting prompts (instructions for AI). Then there is Digg, which tried to create a Reddit competitor but ended up shutting down the service in March, as it simply couldn’t stop bots from overrunning the platform. And as if we needed a reminder of how thoroughly the natural order of the Internet has been upended, Cloudflare states that bot traffic has officially surpassed human traffic on the web—a milestone reached sooner than anyone expected.

The Internet, something created by and for people, yet a place where robots have now appeared and, it seems, taken over the network.

What else is LinkedIn doing about this?

Beyond that button, LinkedIn claims to block hundreds of thousands of automated comment attempts daily—and millions of other automations attempts in recent months—clearly illustrating the sheer volume of bots trying to congratulate users on their “new chapter” in the comments section. The company is also implementing new ranking systems to detect low-quality content before it reaches your suggested feed; in theory, this should reduce the appearance of low-effort, AI-generated content from strangers outside your network.
