Jaishankar speaks to Iranian counterpart Araghchi, urges end to attacks on commercial ships

New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday spoke with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and expressed India’s deep concern over the continuing hostilities in the region. He stressed that commercial vessels and seafarers must not be targeted under any circumstances.

Sharing details of the telephone conversation in a post on X, Jaishankar said, “Had a tele-conversation with FM @araghchi of Iran this evening. Conveyed our deep concerns at the ongoing hostilities in the region.”

He reiterated India’s condemnation of attacks on commercial vessels and their crews, irrespective of who carries them out.

“Strongly urged that attacks on commercial shipping and seafarers be avoided under any circumstance. India condemns any such attack by any party,” Jaishankar added.

Jaishankar also said Araghchi briefed him on Iran’s assessment of the latest developments in the region and the discussions currently taking place.

“Was apprised of Iran’s perspective of current developments and discussions underway. India is always supportive of dialogue and diplomacy,” he said.
