Rain halts trains on KR line

Rayagada: Every monsoon, the Koraput-Rayagada (KR) railway line tests the resilience of both railway authorities and passengers on this weather-sensitive Eastern Ghats route. While celebrated for its engineering marvel, the scenic corridor remains highly vulnerable to heavy seasonal rains in Odisha.

The latest spell of heavy rainfall this month once again exposed the line’s vulnerability, forcing the East Coast Railway (ECoR) to suspend operations on sections of the route after water accumulated over the tracks near Tikiri. As a precautionary measure, railway authorities cancelled and partially terminated several passenger services, including the Sambalpur -Koraput Passenger and the Rayagada-Sambalpur Express, disrupting regional connectivity and leaving scores of passengers stranded.

The incident was not unprecedented. Similar operational disruptions were reported during intense monsoon spells in 2018 and 2023, underscoring a recurring challenge rather than an isolated event.

According to railway officials, the line is particularly vulnerable during intense rainfall because of rapid runoff from the surrounding hills and overflowing adjacent drains. During periods of exceptionally heavy rainfall, water flows onto the tracks, making train movement unsafe until inspections are completed. Once the water recedes and engineers certify the track as fit for operation, services are restored. However, for passengers, the consequences extend far beyond temporary inconvenience. The Koraput-Rayagada line serves as the principal rail link for the tribal districts of Koraput and Rayagada, connecting them with the rest of Odisha and neighbouring States. Besides carrying daily commuters, students, patients, government employees, traders and tourists, the route is also important for the movement of industrial freight and minerals, making uninterrupted operations critical for both public mobility and the regional economy.

Sudden cancellations often leave passengers stranded at intermediate stations, forcing them to seek alternative and costlier road transport, or postpone their journeys altogether. The disruption also affects freight movement and industrial logistics along the corridor, adding to operational challenges during the monsoon season.

Railway officials maintain that safety remains the overriding priority and that operations cannot resume until every affected stretch undergoes detailed inspection. While prompt restoration minimises downtime, the recurring disruptions have renewed discussions on whether additional engineering interventions, including improved drainage, slope stabilisation and storm-water management, could further strengthen the corridor’s resilience against extreme rainfall.

As climate variability increases the frequency of intense rainfall events, the annual disruption of services on the KR line underscores the need to balance operational safety with infrastructure adaptation. For the people of southern Odisha, uninterrupted rail connectivity is not merely a matter of convenience, it is an essential public service that supports mobility, livelihoods and regional development.
