Jammu and Kashmir: 24 National Conference MLAs seek removal of ministers, Omar Abdullah’s aide
New Delhi: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah faces a growing revolt within his own party, the National Conference. Around 25 legislators are reportedly demanding the replacement of all 8 Cabinet Ministers, including the Deputy CM, within the next 15 days. They are also demanding the removal of the CM’s close aide and political advisor, Nasir Aslam Wani.

According to a report in the Times of India, a meeting was held at NC MLA, Qaiser Jamshaid Lone’s home on Friday evening. Here the legislators passed a resolution, seeking a Cabinet overhaul and wider consultations within the party before portfolios are allocated.
An MLA present for the meeting said that 18 MLAs joined the meeting in person, while the rest 7 joined online. The National Conference has 41 MLAs in the 90-member House. It currently runs a coalition government along with the Congress Party, Independent and the CPM. There are 6 Congress legislators, 1 CPM legislator and 1 Independent MLA who support the Omar Abdullah government.
A legislator said, “So far there is no next step. The first step was a big step to bring democracy within the party.” The resolution passed at Lone’s house sought the removal of the 8 ministers and Wani, for the “larger good of the party.”
The provisional president of the party for Kashmir Showkat Mir confirmed the meeting, but played down its significance. He claimed that it was not directed against the party. He said that some senior party leaders wanted an appointment with National Conference president Farooq Abdullah.
Mir further said, “Everyone wants to become a minister. But the CM can appoint only 8 in the Union Territory set up.” He further said that 24 Ministers can be appointed if the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir was restored.
The turmoil in the party comes at a time when party MP Aga Ruhullah Mehdi prepares to quit the party and surrender his Lok Sabha seat on November 3. He accused Omar Abdullah of seeking votes in the name of restoring Article 370 and protection of Jammu and Kashmir’s rights, and then betraying the party and the people.
Omar Abdullah and his father are in New Delhi currently. Here the CM celebrated his wedding with journalist Nidhi Razdan.
