Team India’s blast in New Chandigarh! KL Rahul, Shubman Gill’s centuries, Afghanistan defeated

India maintained its batting dominance on the first day of the one-off Test match being played against Afghanistan in New Chandigarh. Opting to bat first, opener KL Rahul started the day with his aggressive play and eventually scored his 12th century in the longest format of cricket. It was not easy for him to change his game after playing T20 cricket for two months, but Karnataka-born Rahul adapted himself well and after the match he said that he had no hesitation in batting aggressively at times.

After the end of the first day’s play, Rahul said that I felt like playing some aggressive shots and I don’t think that is a bad thing. I keep telling myself this too. Sometimes you sit and start analyzing excessively. I try not to limit my shots. I played a few more shots than usual in the morning, but that didn’t disappoint me. His opening partner Yashasvi Jaiswal was out after scoring 24 runs. After this Rahul made a partnership of 139 runs with Sai Sudarshan.

Batting at number three, Sudarshan, a resident of Chennai, was not certain to be in the playing eleven, because there was a strong possibility of Devdutt Padikkal getting a place in the playing eleven. However, the team management supported Sudarshan, who missed his maiden Test century by 19 runs. After his return to the pavilion, Shubman Gill dominated the game and scored his 11th century in Test cricket. The Indian captain did not appear under pressure anywhere and he faced every strategy of the visiting team very well. The 26-year-old Gill finished the day on 103 not out and took the lead in his domestic Playing on the field, Gill will try to double it on the second day of the Test.

Rishabh Pant came to the crease after KL Rahul was out. Wicketkeeper-batsman Pant struggled throughout IPL 2026 and eventually stepped down from the captaincy of Lucknow Super Giants. There was a lot of pressure on him before the Test, but Pant batted brilliantly in the middle and ended the day on 50 not out. He has hit three sixes so far and will hope to maintain the same rhythm tomorrow also.

Meanwhile, Afghanistan will need to take some quick wickets to make a comeback in the match. India ended the day’s play at 368/3 and if the visitors fail to put any kind of pressure on the hosts on Sunday morning, they could be out of the contest.
