Jio Looks Beyond Telecom with AI and Network Technology
Jio is looking to build a technology business that goes beyond connectivity. Jio is putting focus on artificial intelligence, network software, enterprise solutions and technologies, for international markets.

The company, which entered India’s telecom sector a decade ago, has been steadily expanding its technology portfolio. Akash Ambani, Chairman of Jio Platforms, said Jio is “much more than a telecommunications company,” pointing to its work across connectivity, digital products, enterprise solutions and AI.
One of Jio’s focuses has been, on developing 5G technology. The company has created a 5G setup that includes the core network, radio systems and network operations software. 15 Months after launching the service Jio managed to cover the entire country with 5G. By March 2026 the number of Jio 5G users had passed 268 million.
Jio is also building a sizable intellectual property portfolio. As of March 31, 2026, Jio Platforms and its subsidiaries had filed a cumulative 6,817 patent applications, of which 1,009 had been granted globally.
The company also featured among the top 20 global applicants in the World Intellectual Property Organization’s Patent Cooperation Treaty rankings for 2025. Jio secured the 12th position in the rankings.
Beyond 5G, the company is working on technologies covering fixed broadband, private 5G networks, cloud computing and artificial intelligence. It has also developed proprietary technologies, including an unlicensed-band radio technology.
Jio’s fixed broadband business has continued to grow as well. Its customer base crossed 27 million connections in March 2026.
The company is now looking at taking parts of its technology architecture to international markets. If successful, the move could help Jio create another source of revenue outside its traditional telecommunications business.
