Lebanon bleeds within 24 hours of peace agreement! 16 killed in Israeli attacks, US-Iran ‘historic deal’ in danger
The ink was not even dry on the 'historic' agreement announced yesterday between America and Iran to restore peace in West Asia (Middle East) when the entire region once again got engulfed in the fire of horrific violence. Just a day after the peace deal between the US and Iran, southern Lebanon has faced one of the deadliest nights in recent months. At least 16 people have been killed in fierce airstrikes and artillery shelling by Israel in the Nabatieh district of southern Lebanon, according to Lebanon's National News Agency (NNA). Many others are seriously injured, while dozens of people are buried under the debris of collapsed buildings, due to which the death toll is expected to rise further.
According to reports, several towns and residential areas were targeted during the night. The NNA described the attack as one of the worst bombings in the region in recent times. Israeli artillery shelling was reported in Nabatieh city, Kfar Jawz, Kfar Ramon and Zebedin. Later airstrikes targeted Kafr Tibnit and Rayhan Heights. At least eight people were killed in Nabatieh and Harouf. Four other people were killed in an attack on a house between al-Sharqiya and Douair. Three more people were killed in Kafar Sir. In a separate incident, one person was killed and another injured in an Israeli drone strike targeting a motorcycle near the Douai municipality building.
The peace agreement promised to end the fighting
The violence comes just a day after the US and Iran signed a 14-point memorandum of understanding (MoU), which was presented as a roadmap for peace in the Middle East. One of the main points of the agreement That all military operations and hostile activities, including in Lebanon, must cease immediately and permanently. The agreement was digitally signed by US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian and officials described it as a "gentleman's agreement" aimed at reducing tensions in the region.
