Abhishek Banerjee Demands Disqualification Of 20 Rebel Trinamool Congress MPs

A high-level delegation from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), led by Party General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee, met with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Friday to formally demand the disqualification of 20 MPs from the renegade party in a major political confrontation. The four-person delegation—three members of the Lok Sabha and one member of the Rajya Sabha—submitted twenty different petitions aimed at parliamentarians who had recently defected to the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI), which is based in Tripura. The party is advocating for swift constitutional action against the lawmakers for changing political allegiances, according to the comprehensive reports.

Speaking to media after the crucial meeting, Abhishek Banerjee vehemently questioned the legitimacy of the defectors holding onto their parliamentary seats after renouncing the political platform that led to their election. Banerjee called their acts "fundamentally unconstitutional" and said that although the members are allowed to leave the Trinamool Congress, democratic integrity requires them to resign from the Lok Sabha and run for office again at the same time. Citing the 10th Schedule of the Indian Constitution, the Trinamool delegation based its case on the Anti-Defection Law. According to Banerjee, any elected official who voluntarily leaves their original political party is inevitably subject to disqualification under these constitutional requirements. A significant internal uprising by 20 Trinamool Lok Sabha members, led by seasoned four-term lawmakers Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar and Satabdi Roy, is the root cause of the current problem. The faction formally completed a calculated move to join the NCPI earlier this month, albeit initially retaining an internal rebel identity within the Trinamool congressional bloc. The Trinamool Congress presently maintains 27 active seats in the Lok Sabha, with the Basirhat constituency in the North 24 Parganas area remaining empty following the death of MP Haji Sk.
