45 Kg Rotten Meat, Expired Dairy Products Found; Bengaluru Pub Shut After Food Safety Raid

A pub in Bengaluru’s upscale UB City complex was ordered to shut after food safety officials found unhygienic kitchen conditions and large quantities of allegedly spoiled food during inspections across the city.

The inspections, conducted by the Food Safety and Drugs Administration Department, covered food storage facilities and food business establishments across Bengaluru Urban district and BBMP zones. Officials seized around 132 kg of food items including 70 kg of soy sauce and 15 litres of used cooking oil.

Inspectors reportedly discovered an unhygienic kitchen at Skyye Lounge in UB City, and called for its closure. Some of the food found included spoiled chicken and beef; fungus was reported on some of the beef.

The broader inspections also identified a number of other food safety issues, such as fish that has gone bad, meat that has been infested with fungus, dairy products that are past their use-by dates and mushrooms and sauces that are considered unfit for consumption. The captured food consisted of about 70kg of soy sauce, officials said.

The inspections fall under the growing scrutiny of the restaurants and food establishments for food storage and hygiene in Bengaluru. Multiple restaurants were said to be hit because they were found to be serving food that was out of date or not stored properly.

Authorities are continuing to enforce to assure adherence to food safety standards and to prevent food from being sold or used that is not safe.
