Why has Surat court issued a bailable warrant against Anurag Kashyap? Explained
New Delhi: Filmmaker has landed in fresh legal trouble after a Surat court issued a bailable warrant against him in connection with his alleged remarks about the Brahmin community on social media. The action came after the filmmaker failed to appear before the court despite repeated summonses.

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate JV Chauhan issued the warrant on Monday (November 2) and scheduled the next hearing for December 24, 2026. The case relates to a controversial post Kashyap allegedly shared on X (formerly Twitter) in April 2025, which sparked objections from members of the Brahmin community.
The development has brought an old social media controversy back into focus, even though Kashyap had publicly apologised for his language shortly after the incident.
Surat court issues warrant against Anurag Kashyap?
The complaint against Kashyap was filed by Surat-based lawyer Kamlesh Raval, who is also a legal advisor to the Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP). According to the complaint, the filmmaker made allegedly objectionable remarks about the Brahmin community in a post dated April 16, 2025. The petitioner claimed that the comments were insulting to the entire community and could create hostility between different social groups.
The court had directed the registration of a case against Kashyap in May under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 192, which deals with promoting enmity between different groups, and Section 352, concerning intentional insult with the intention of provoking a breach of peace. The proceedings also refer to Section 353(2), relating to statements and circulation of false information that could cause public mischief.
After the proceedings began, summonses were issued asking Kashyap to appear before the court. However, he reportedly failed to attend despite the notices. A public summons was also published in a newspaper’s Mumbai edition, according to the complainant.
Anurag Kashyap ‘Brahmin remark’ controversy
The controversy dates back to April 2025, when the trailer of the Hindi film, Phule, attracted objections from certain organisations, including Akhil Bharatiya Brahmin Samaj and Vipra Sena. The groups had raised concerns over certain portions of the film, which revolves around social reformers Jyotirao Phule and Savitribai Phule.
Anurag Kashyap reacted to the criticism on X. When a social media user named Aaditya questioned his post, the filmmaker responded angrily and allegedly asked, “What have you achieved by being a Brahmin?”
The remark did not go down well with sections of the Brahmin community. Lawyer Kamlesh Raval subsequently approached the Surat court, seeking legal action against the filmmaker.
In his complaint, Raval alleged that Kashyap’s comments insulted the community and had the potential to promote hostility between different caste and religious groups. He also argued that the filmmaker’s public profile and influence made the remarks particularly concerning.
Anurag Kashyap’s apology
The filmmaker had responded to the backlash in April 2025 by issuing a public apology on Instagram. Anurag Kashyap acknowledged that he had crossed a line while replying to a social media user in anger. He apologised to the Brahmin community, along with his friends and family, for his choice of words and the abusive language he had used.
He clarified that he had not intended to hurt the community and regretted the manner in which he had responded to the criticism.
What does a bailable warrant mean?
A bailable warrant does not automatically mean that the filmmaker will be arrested and sent to jail. It allows the accused to secure release by furnishing the bail amount or meeting the conditions specified by the court. The warrant has been issued because of Kashyap’s reported failure to appear during the proceedings. The matter remains pending, and the next hearing is scheduled for December 24.
Kashyap, known for films such as , Black Friday and Dev.D, has not been reported to have made a fresh public statement following the latest court order.
