Union Government Approves New 60-Seat Ayurvedic Medical College And Hospital In Tripura
The Union Ministry of AYUSH has officially approved Tripura Government Ayurvedic Medical College and Hospital, which is a great boost for the traditional healthcare education in the Northeast region of India. The new facility, which will be managed by the government, will have a capacity of 60 undergraduate seats in the Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) program from the 2026–27 academic session and will be located at Udaipur in the Gomati district of southern Tripura. Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Friday announced the development in a state communication citing an official statement from the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM) that it had satisfied all the statutory requirements.

Chief Minister Saha, who is also holding the charge of Health and Family Welfare portfolio, showed his gratitude for the visionary leadership and sustained support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in upgrading medical education in the region. The historic building will significantly enhance the health services provided to the local community, as well as give young people the opportunity to pursue a career in traditional medicine from within the state, Saha said.
The addition of this specialized institution significantly enhances Tripura’s expanding medical infrastructure. With this, the state has around 550 seats in MBBS and nearly 200 seats in post-graduate medical programme at three major medical institutes – the Government Medical College, Agartala and Government Medical College, Tripura and also the Tripura Santiniketan Medical College, which are private, and a government dental college with 63 seats. Going forward, the government is keen to roll out major healthcare expansions, such as blueprints for several super-specialty hospitals, a dedicated eye hospital, and another medical college soon to be established in the TTAADC area.
