Shakeel Noorani, Joru Ka Ghulam director, held over actress’ sexual assault allegations; sent to police custody till Aug 12

New Delhi: A 33-year-old actress’ complaint has led to the arrest of filmmaker Shakeel Noorani, known for directing films including Joru Ka Ghulam and Bade Dilwala. The 73-year-old director was arrested by Mumbai Police in the early hours of August 8 following allegations of rape and sexual assault.

Noorani was arrested by Malvani Police after the actress filed a complaint against him. A case has been registered under Sections 64(2)(M), 123, 351(2) and 88 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

According to the police, the actress first met Noorani at an awards event in Lokhandwala in 2016. As reported by Mid-Day, she alleged that the filmmaker spoke to her about an upcoming film and asked her to get in touch with him regarding work.

The actress later allegedly went to Noorani’s home in Malvani for a script reading. In her FIR, she claimed that the filmmaker offered her a drink, following which she lost consciousness.

According to her complaint, she regained consciousness to find Noorani showing her a video on his phone. She alleged that he subsequently threatened to circulate the video if she approached the police or informed her family.

The actress further alleged that Noorani used the video as a means of threatening her and sexually assaulted her on multiple occasions. She also claimed that he repeatedly gave her contraceptive pills after the alleged sexual encounters.

Shakeel Noorani’s lawyer denies allegations

Noorani’s lawyer, Advocate Vikas Singh Goar, has denied the allegations and maintained that the filmmaker has been falsely implicated.

“The allegations made by the actress are yet to be established before a court, and the investigation is underway,” he said, as reported by Mid-Day. He added that Noorani is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

Following his arrest, Noorani was produced before the Borivali Holiday Court. The police sought his custody as part of their investigation into the allegations.

The police are expected to examine and recover the alleged video mentioned in the complaint and investigate whether similar incidents may have taken place at other locations.

The court subsequently sent Noorani to police custody until August 12.

Shakeel Noorani has directed films including Bade Dilwala (1999), Joru Ka Ghulam (2000) and Acid of Love (2005).

Joru Ka Ghulam, one of his better-known films, starred Govinda and Twinkle Khanna.
