Radium cattle belt to curb night accidents

Dhenkanal: To reduce road accidents and protect stray cattle, the Animal Resources Development department has launched a large-scale drive in Dhenkanal district to fit stray cows and bulls with reflective radium belts under the Gomata Suraksha Yojana.

The campaign was formally rolled out across multiple locations in the district. The district administration has set a target to cover 2,673 stray cattle with reflective radium belts by the end of August 2026. Officials said the belts glow clearly in vehicle headlights at night, making cattle visible from a distance and giving drivers time to slow down. The initiative aims to curb the rising number of night-time collisions involving stray animals on National Highways, State Highways and busy urban roads.

The drive brings together key stakeholders, including the Chief District Veterinary Officer, animal welfare and disease control teams, NHAI officials, municipal authorities, and volunteer groups.

“The reflective belts will not only protect cattle from being hit but also safeguard motorists, pedestrians and the general public,” said Prabhas Kumar Behera, Chief District Veterinary Officer, Dhenkanal. “This will help reduce loss of life, injuries, vehicle damage and the economic cost of accidents, while also raising social awareness about animal welfare and road safety,” he said.

According to the department, stray cattle on roads, especially after dark, have become a serious safety hazard. Making them visible is seen as a practical step to protect both human lives and livestock. The district administration said the target will be achieved through joint efforts of the district and civic bodies, NHAI, the Animal Resources Development department, volunteer groups and local citizens.
