Priyank Kharge warns against vigilantism over migrants, urges public to share information with police

New Delhi: Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge has issued a strong warning against conducting self-styled investigations into migrants in Bengaluru, posting videos on social media and criticising the government without verification.

Kharge said the government would not tolerate forms of “vigilantism” or “moral policing” carried out in the name of monitoring migrants or protecting the state.

Social media posts could hamper investigations

The minister said collecting information and publicly sharing videos or details on social media could alert international networks and potentially interfere with confidential government operations.

He urged people who have genuine information about suspicious individuals or activities to share it directly with the police or relevant authorities, rather than posting it online.

According to Kharge, people who genuinely care about national and state security should cooperate with law enforcement agencies instead of conducting independent investigations.

Around 1,000 migrants identified

Kharge said the government has already identified around 1,000 migrants from various regions, including Bangladesh and Africa, over the past three months and handed them over to the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO).

He added that the state government remains in continuous coordination with the Border Security Force (BSF) and FRRO officials on the issue.

Kharge maintained that the government is committed to taking stringent action wherever required and warned that irresponsible publicity and social media campaigns could create security concerns.
