My deepest respect: Novak Djokovic praises students after mass movement topples Serbian govt

New Delhi: Tennis great Novak Djokovic praised the students and hoped for a prosperous future of Serbia after the student-led movement toppled the existing government in the country. The Student List Party, a political organisation born out of the student-led protests, emerged triumphant in the recently concluded elections.

The Student List Party has secured a majority in the parliamentary election and is in talks to form the new government in Serbia. Aleksandar Vucic’s ruling party has conceded defeat and acknowledged the people’s mandate. Djokovic reacted to the result during a press conference at the Swiss Indoors tournament in Basel on Tuesday.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion, who is the most successful male player in tennis history, had earlier backed the student protests in the country and expressed his admiration for the youngsters challenging the ruling party. Djokovic said he has a lot of admiration for what the students have achieved and said they have given people in Serbia and around the world a reason to feel proud.

“I’m very happy about this. My deepest respect to the students who fought and showed dignity and resilience. I have lots of admiration for what they’ve done. They managed to create a sense of pride in Serbia and in the world,” Djokovic said.

“The victory is secure and we all now have hopes that our country will be prosperous and enjoying the future that is coming,” he added.

How student-led movement toppled Serbian government

The student protests started in Serbia after a tragic accident at the Novi Sad railway station led to the death of 16 people in November, 2016. The demonstrators called for accountability over the tragedy amid allegations of corruption against the government. Howeve,r the authorities kept denying any wrongdoing.

The protests continued to grow with time, taking shape of a mass movement, drawing support from people across all walks of life in Serbia. The protestors also faced intimidation and violence during their demonstrations but support only grew in numbers as students joined hands to demand a political change.

A party named The Student List was formed in May last year out of the movement and it decided to bring candidates from different sectors to contest against the ruling party. The Student List secured a majority in the parliamentary election this month, with Vucic and his ruling party admitting defeat.

Djokovic’s comments praising the student-led movement came after the election result against the ruling Serbian Progressive Party. The result marks a huge political shift in the country as Vucic’s party had dominated the country for 14 years.
