Karimnagar Gets Its First Indoor 33/11 kV Substation

Karimnagar: The first indoor 33/11 kV electricity substation in Karimnagar under the TGSPDCL jurisdiction was technically charged on Tuesday, strengthening the city’s power infrastructure and addressing the shortage of land for conventional substations.

TGSPDCL Chairman and Managing Director Karnati Varun Reddy said indoor substations would help overcome space constraints in urban areas while ensuring reliable and quality power supply. He technically charged the substation constructed at Telangana Chowk at a cost of Rs 6.92 crore.

Built on 484 square yards, the facility has a control room and modern switchgear panels on the ground floor, while the first floor houses the subdivision and section offices. Varun Reddy said another indoor substation would be established at the Collectorate to meet the city’s future power requirements. Provision had also been made for capacity enhancement and feeder expansion, he added.

The substation receives 33 kV supply from the 132 kV Vavilalapalli and Padmanagar substations. An additional 33 kV feeder has been kept ready for future con

The facility is expected to reduce the load on the existing 33/11 kV substations at SRR, Bhagatnagar and Saptagiri and improve power supply capacity in the city.

Two 8 MVA power transformers using ester-oil technology have been installed. According to the CMD, the technology offers better fire safety due to the higher flash point of ester oil and improved moisture resistance, which can enhance insulation life and transformer performance under high temperatures and heavy loads. It is also expected to reduce maintenance requirements and long-term costs.

The substation is equipped with SCADA, IED relays and advanced RTU systems linked to the TGSPDCL corporate control centre. The system will enable remote monitoring, quicker identification of faults and faster restoration of supply.

Varun Reddy said indoor substation works were also progressing at Pulang Rythu Bazaar in Nizamabad Circle, near Vaikunthadham and the Girls High School in Hanamkonda Circle, besides the Kamareddy Municipal Office and Khammam Bus Stand areas.

Directors V Mohan Rao and T Madhusudan, Chief Engineers K Tirumala Rao, Surender and Annapurna, Karimnagar SE Vijender Reddy, DEs, AEs and other officials participated.
