Glenn Maxwell retires from international cricket, brings curtain down on 14-year-long career

New Delhi: Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell announced his retirement from international cricket on Tuesday, drawing curtains on a 14-year-long international career. Maxwell played all three formats for Australia and was a white-ball regular.

Known for his explosive batting and electric fielding, Maxwell was one of the biggest crowd pullers throughout his career and played some terrific knocks for the Aussies across formats. Maxwell was out of the Australian Test side for a long time before retiring from ODIs last year.

He decided to quit ODIs in June last year after Australia’s loss to India in the semifinal of the Champions Trophy 2025. Maxwell was only active in T20Is for Australia, however, his hopes of extending his career in the shortest format became uncertain after he was excluded from Australia’s 2026-27 central contracts.

He was also left out of Australia’s T20I squad for the Bangladesh tour in May-June this year. After a series of setbacks, Maxwell eventually decided to call time on his international career.

Maxwell made his international debut for Australia in an ODI against Afghanistan in August 2012. He went on to play 7 Tests, 149 ODIs and 130 T20Is in his international career. Maxwell scored 339 runs and picked up seven wickets in Tests. He finished with 3990 runs and 77 wickets in ODIs.

In T20Is, he scored 2897 runs and scalped 51 wickets in 130 matches for Australia. Maxwell was part of three World Cup-winning campaigns with Australia. He lifted the ODI World Cups with Australia in 2015 and 2023, and was part of the T20 World Cup-winning side in 2021.
