Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow one last time? Actor drops major hint about Pirates of the Caribbean 6 return

New Delhi: Captain Jack Sparrow might not have sailed his final voyage just yet. Yes, you read that right! Actor Johnny Depp has finally addressed the big question fans have been asking for years now – Will he return to Pirates of the Caribbean 6?

The 63-year-old actor isn’t officially saying yes, but he isn’t shutting the door either. While promoting his new film Ebenezer, Depp opened up about potentially returning to the blockbuster franchise and made one thing very clear that his friendship with producer Jerry Bruckheimer could play a huge role in what happens next.

Johnny Depp on returning as Jack Sparrow

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Johnny Depp was asked about returning to the popular franchise for another Pirates of the Caribbean movie. Responding to it, he said, “If things are exactly where they need to be with regard to how they are going to top off the ‘Pirates’ franchise… the only involvement I really want to have, truly, is just to send them off on a better note.”

He then spoke about his bond with Bruckheimer, adding, “I will go to work with Jerry Bruckheimer tomorrow for anything. Doesn’t matter… if it’s Jerry, I trust him. We have a deep friendship.”

Jerry Bruckheimer wants Johnny Depp back too

Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed in 2025 that he had spoken to Johnny Depp about another Pirates movie. At the time, he suggested that Depp’s decision could ultimately come down to how Jack Sparrow is written.

“If he likes the way the part’s written, I think he would do it. It’s all about what’s on the page, as we all know… We are still working on a screenplay. We want to make it. We just got to get the right screenplay. We haven’t quite gotten there yet, but we’re close,” Bruckheimer said.

Speaking about Depp and the character he turned into a pop-culture icon, Bruckheimer previously said, “It’s a reboot, but if it was up to me, [Johnny] would be in it. I love him. He’s a good friend. He’s an amazing artist and he’s a unique look. He created Captain Jack. That was not on the page, that was him doing a little Pepé Le Pew and Keith Richards. That was his interpretation of Jack Sparrow.”

What’s happening with Pirates of the Caribbean 6?

Disney was earlier developing two different projects, one was a reboot featuring Margot Robbie and another movie connected to the original franchise. Robbie later revealed that Disney was no longer interested in moving ahead with the female-led project she had been developing.

Meanwhile, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales writer Jeff Nathanson came aboard the sixth film.

Bruckheimer previously sounded pretty excited about Nathanson’s work on the screenplay, particularly its final act. “He’s cracked it,” Bruckheimer said. “He’s got an amazing third act. We just gotta clean up the first and second and then we’ll get there. But he wrote a great, great third act.”

However, the final cast and storyline of the movie have yet to be officially announced.

Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow

Johnny Depp first stepped into Captain Jack Sparrow’s boots in 2003’s Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. His quirky walk, unpredictable humour, and instantly recognisable performance turned Jack Sparrow into one of Hollywood’s most famous movie characters. He went on to headline five Pirates films between 2003 and 2017.

Each of those movies earned more than $650 million worldwide, while Dead Man’s Chest and On Stranger Tides crossed the massive $1 billion mark globally. Together, the films starring Depp collected around $4.5 billion at the worldwide box office.
