ED attaches Azam Khan-promoted Jauhar University property worth Rs 1,170 crore

New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday said it had provisionally attached the land and building of the Mohammad Ali Jauhar University, promoted by Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan, in Uttar Pradesh under the anti-money laundering law.

The university property has an estimated current market value of approximately Rs 1,170 crore, the agency said.

“The university campus at Jauhar Nagar, village Singhankhera, Rampur, is held by the Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar Trust, which was founded and is controlled by Mohammad Azam Khan, who is also the honorary Chancellor of the University,” the ED said in a statement.

The agency has issued a provisional attachment order under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

The ED conducted searches in connection with the case in August and also questioned Khan, who is lodged in Rampur jail, according to the report.

The Lucknow-headquartered trust counts Khan, a former Uttar Pradesh Cabinet minister, as its principal trustee, along with some family members and associates.

The trust runs the Mohammad Ali Jauhar University, established in 2006, as well as a public school in Rampur district.
