Disney reportedly plans thousands of layoffs, managers asked to cut costs by 20%: What we know
Disney is reportedly preparing to cut thousands of jobs as the entertainment giant looks for ways to reduce spending across its businesses. According to a Bloomberg report, the company has asked some managers to identify annual cost savings of up to 20 per cent. The proposed cuts could affect several divisions, although Disney has yet to announce the final number of employees who may lose their jobs.

The reported restructuring comes under CEO Josh D’Amaro, who is trying to improve profitability amid rising competition in streaming, weaker box-office performance and changing viewing habits. Disney employed approximately 2.31 lakh people worldwide at the end of fiscal 2025. The company has already reduced its workforce several times in recent years.

Why is Disney planning another round of layoffs?
Disney is facing growing pressure to control expenses across its entertainment and media businesses. Traditional television audiences continue to decline, streaming competition remains intense, and artificial intelligence is changing how media companies operate.
The proposed 20 per cent savings target applies to annual costs in certain operations. It does not mean Disney plans to fire 20 percent of its entire workforce.
According to Bloomberg, some of the savings could be redirected into movies, television programming, technology, theme parks and cruise operations.

Which Disney departments could face job cuts?
The company has not released a confirmed department-wise layoff plan. Reports suggest certain operations could face deeper reductions.
Disney’s television business is already under review, with earlier reports identifying potential restructuring in its legal and global affairs units.
The company previously cut jobs across ABC, Pixar, ESPN, its film studio and theme park operations.
In September 2026, Disney reportedly reduced several hundred positions in human resources and technology. Around 1,000 jobs were cut in April.

What about severance packages?
Disney has not disclosed severance packages, compensation arrangements or a timeline for the newly reported layoffs. There is no confirmed information on which employees would qualify for financial support.
No verified public statements from employees specifically affected by this proposed round of layoffs were available at the time of reporting.
Disney President Dana Walden had addressed the need for restructuring at Bloomberg’s Screentime conference in October, saying, “there is a need to constantly evaluate how you’re structured and how big is the organization.”

Disney has been cutting jobs for years
Under former CEO Bob Iger, Disney announced plans in 2023 to eliminate 7,000 positions as part of a $5.5 billion cost-reduction programme.
The latest reported restructuring suggests those efforts are continuing under the new leadership.
