Dhinidhi Desinghu wins historic Youth Olympics swimming bronze, sets national record

Bengaluru: Sixteen-year-old Bengaluru swimmer Dhinidhi Desinghu has created history by winning India’s first-ever swimming medal at the Youth Olympic Games, clinching bronze in the women’s 100m freestyle event at Dakar 2026 with a national record timing of 56.27 seconds.

The achievement marks a significant milestone for Indian swimming and places Dhinidhi among the country’s most promising young sporting talents. The Paris 2024 Olympian delivered an impressive performance in Monday’s final, finishing behind Croatia’s Ana Bobanović, who won gold in 55.89 seconds, and New Zealand’s Alyssa Lawson, who secured silver in 56.13 seconds.

Dhinidhi also became the first Indian female swimmer to qualify for a swimming final at the Youth Olympic Games, adding another landmark achievement to her growing career.

Interestingly, her journey in swimming began despite an initial fear of water. Through years of dedication, disciplined training and determination, she has emerged as one of India’s leading young swimmers. At the age of 14, she became the youngest member of the Indian contingent at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The historic bronze is the outcome of years of hard work by the swimmer, her family and coaches. Her achievement also highlights the importance of sustained support and investment in nurturing young sporting talent in the country.

Earlier this year, Bajaj Finserv ltd announced its support for Dhinidhi as part of its long-term initiative to encourage emerging Indian athletes. The association, facilitated by sports talent management company Baseline Ventures, provides assistance beyond conventional sponsorship, covering training, competition exposure, equipment, fitness and recovery requirements.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday Manav Mianwal, Group Chief Marketing Officer, Bajaj Finserv Ltd and President – Digital Platforms, BFL , said Dhinidhi’s historic achievement was a proud moment for India and an inspiration for young athletes aspiring to compete internationally.

He said the medal reflected years of sacrifice, determination and collective support, adding that the company believed promising athletes should receive encouragement well before reaching the podium.

Bajaj Finserv is also expanding its support for emerging sporting talent in swimming, badminton and tennis. Through these initiatives, it aims to provide young athletes access to quality coaching, training facilities, nutrition, equipment and international competition opportunities.
