Dhanush’s political debut buzz grows as actor meets 3,000 women fans in Chennai
New Delhi: South Indian actor Dhanush is set to meet more than 3,000 women executives and volunteers of his official fan movement on Sunday at a private engineering college outside Chennai. The massive gathering comes just days after his fan base was formally renamed from Dhanush Fans Club to Dhanush Narpani Iyakkam (Dhanush Welfare Movement), triggering intense chatter about a potential political debut.

The 43-year-old star’s meet-up has drawn major attention locally, with posters and banners welcoming him across the suburban college venue. The organizational shift was officially cleared during a key meeting in Coimbatore on 14 October, where the outfit also unveiled its fresh logo: a circular red-and-white border framing a red star, carrying an image of Dhanush greeting with folded hands.
Back in July, during an event in Tiruvallur, the actor had directly called on his followers to move past simple screen adoration. He urged them to direct their unity into grassroots community service and help struggling families in their respective neighbourhoods, rather than only turning up for cinema and audio launches.
Political parties react to entry rumours
The moves have naturally caught the eye of the state’s established political camps. Following reports of a recent trip by Dhanush to Delhi to meet political figures, senior leaders across party lines shared their reactions.
Former AIADMK minister K T Rajendra Balaji stated openly that his party would welcome Dhanush with open arms if he decides to step into active politics. On the other side, veteran DMK leader S Regupathy pointed out that every citizen holds the democratic right to enter public life, noting, “When Vijay can enter politics, why not Dhanush?”
Following a well-trodden Kollywood path
Cinema and politics have shared deep roots in Tamil Nadu for decades. From iconic figures like M G Ramachandran and J Jayalalithaa to M Karunanidhi, film popularity has frequently powered political careers. More recently, Chief Minister M K Stalin and his son Udhayanidhi Stalin carried forward this twin legacy of screen and statecraft.
Speculation around Dhanush has gained notable steam ever since actor-politician C Joseph Vijay turned his fan base into the Vijay Makkal Iyakkam, later forming the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) in February 2024. Vijay’s party secured 108 seats in the April assembly polls, eventually forming an alliance government in May a meteoric rise that has kept the spotlight firmly trained on Kollywood stars eyeing the public arena.
