Anthropic sets aside company equity for communities affected by AI

Anthropic has committed 5% of its shares to a new Public Benefit Fund that is intended to support communities affected by artificial intelligence. The transfer is subject to stockholder approval, making that condition essential to any description of the commitment.

The AI company announced the plan on 18 October 2026. It said the fund would hold company equity and direct future proceeds toward public benefit, including grants to nonprofit organisations or, potentially, direct payments to affected populations.

How the fund is designed

The fund will operate as a wholly owned limited liability company rather than a tax-exempt charity. Anthropic says this structure is meant to provide flexibility in how money is distributed. It also says equity held by the fund will not be used for lobbying or political donations.

Beyond the initial 5%, Anthropic’s board may add another 2% for every 50% rise in the company’s value above a defined baseline. The company has not yet published that baseline, the fund’s governance details or the milestones that would trigger additional allocations.

A broader public-benefit pledge

Anthropic says it has separately committed $200 million to studying and addressing AI’s effects on workers. The company also says its co-founders have pledged to donate 80% of their equity and that roughly half of employees participate in a donation-matching programme.

Counting those pledges, Anthropic estimates that about 20% of its shares are dedicated to public-good purposes, with the possibility of more in future. The plan is substantial on paper, but its eventual value and impact will depend on shareholder approval, company valuation, governance rules and future distributions.
