CWG 2026: Tejas Shirse becomes first Indian since 1966 to qualify for men’s 110m hurdles final

New Delhi: Tejas Shirse made history on Monday by becoming the first Indian to qualify for the men’s 110m hurdles final at the Commonwealth Games. The national record holder produced a composed run in the heats in Glasgow, finishing third in his race with a timing of 13.76 seconds to book his place in the medal round.

The 24-year-old ended the qualification round as the sixth-fastest athlete overall. England’s Samuel Bennett topped Heat 1 with a time of 13.20 seconds while Jamaica’s Jerome Campbell finished second in 13.33 seconds. The top three athletes from each heat along with the next two fastest runners, advanced to the final.

Shirse came into the Games in good form after setting the national record of 13.27 seconds during the Indian Athletics Series in Ludhiana last month. Although he did not match that mark in Glasgow, his effort was enough to keep India’s hopes alive in the event.

Mixed day for Indian athletics

While Shirse celebrated a historic qualification, it was disappointment for sprinter Gurindervir Singh in the men’s 100m. The 24-year-old, who became the first Indian to run below 10.10 seconds earlier this year with a national record of 10.09 seconds, could not reproduce that form on his Commonwealth Games debut.

Gurindervir clocked 10.39 seconds in the heats and finished 28th overall among 73 runners, missing out on a place in the semi-finals. Though, a time of 10.24 seconds would have secured qualification but he finishes with the 28th-fastest time.

Sreeshankar moves into long jump final

There was more good news for India as Commonwealth Games silver medallist Murali Sreeshankar comfortably reached the men’s long jump final.

Sreeshankar cleared the automatic qualification mark of 8.00 metres with a leap of 8.01m on his very first attempt. The effort secured his place in the final as he looks to improve on the silver medal he won at the previous Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
