Manchester United hit 40-year low after slipping into Premier League relegation zone

New Delhi: have slipped into the Premier League relegation zone for the first time in 40 years at this stage of the 2026-27 season after Nottingham Forest registered a 3-1 victory against Manchester City, sending them to the bottom three.

Forest handed City their third consecutive league defeat, which meant that the Red Devils ended a day in the relegation zone after playing at least nine league games for the first time since November 1986, when they sat 21st after 15 matches.

If Sunderland beat Chelsea and Crystal Palace avoid losing against Liverpool at Selhurst Park on Sunday, the Red Devils will drop to the bottom of the Premier League standings before facing Unai Emery’s Aston Villa at Old Trafford later in the day.

Michael Carrick’s side take on Aston Villa having failed to secure a victory in the league since a 5-2 home win against promoted Ipswich Town on August 30. Under Carrick, Man United have endured the worst start to a Premier League season in the club’s history, marking their poorest beginning to a campaign in 40 years.

Manager Ron Atkinson was sacked in November 1986 after a disappointing start to the season, with Sir Alex Ferguson replacing him at Old Trafford. Although the club’s 3-2 Champions League win against AS Roma on Tuesday eased some of the pressure on Carrick, but his future remains uncertain, and a defeat to Aston Villa could signal the end of the road for the former United player.

‘I know exactly what we’re capable of, and we all do’

Speaking on Friday ahead of the game, Carrick said he hoped United’s dramatic comeback win against AS Roma would provide his side with a much-needed boost and inspire the players going forward.

“Obviously it’s a positive reaction. Again, it’s not like all of a sudden we’re getting carried away. I have seen enough from the players. I know what we’re capable of. I’ve said it enough. I know exactly what we’re capable of, and we all do. You’ve seen it from different perspective. You know what we’re capable as a team, as a team. We’ve proved it over time,” Carrick said of the mood in his squad since Tuesday.

Manchester United have collected just seven points from their opening nine Premier League matches, recording only one victory during that run.
