He has all qualities of a leader: Yuvraj Singh backs Abhishek Sharma as future India captain

New Delhi: Legendary all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has backed Abhishek Sharma to lead the in the future. Yuvraj, who has often been credited for his role as a mentor in helping Abhishek improve his game, believes the swashbuckling left-hander has all the qualities of a leader.

Abhishek has captained Punjab in T20s in the domestic circuit and has also served as the vice-captain of his current IPL team, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). However, it was Ishan Kishan who led the team in the absence of regular skipper Pat Cummins during the IPL 2026 earlier this year.

Abhishek is yet to get a chance to lead his team in the IPL, which Yuvraj believes will be key if the left-hander is to captain the Indian team in the future. Yuvraj, who shares a close bond with Abhishek, said it will be too early to say if the star batter will make a good captain, but insisted he has all the qualities of a leader.

“Well, it’s too early to say whether he has the makings of a captain, but I feel he has all the qualities of a leader. I think he encourages the younger guys in state cricket as well. I love the way he encourages Sooryavanshi, puts his hand on his shoulder and motivates him. I think that’s a good sign of a senior leader, whatever you want to call it,” Yuvraj was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

“If you want to captain India one day, I think it’s important to captain your IPL side. That gives you the kind of confidence you need to lead India. I’m sure time will tell whether he is capable of doing it. If it’s in his destiny, I’m sure he’ll get the opportunity. If not, then so be it. But I’m sure he’ll finish as a great white-ball player, whether he becomes captain or not,” he added.

Abhishek Sharma continues to impress in T20Is

Abhishek has become a vital cog in the Indian batting line-up in T20Is and continues to impress in the shortest format with his incredible consistency. The swashbuckling left-hander is arguably one of the best openers in T20Is at present.

Known for his explosive batting, Abhishek has the ability to take down any bowling attack on his day. He was part of India’s T20 World Cup 2026 winning team and has continued to pile on runs in the shortest format with incredible consistency.

Abhishek is currently the second-highest run-scorer in T20Is in 2026 with 1152 runs in 39 matches for India at a strike rate of over 205. He is only behind his Indian teammate Kishan, who leads the elite list with 1159 runs in 37 T20Is in 2026 so far.
